A Review of School Readiness Practices in the States: Early Learning Guidelines and Assessments
The authors reviewed state practices to support children’s school readiness from birth to age five. The authors provided a brief review of the research on the importance of early childhood education, an overview of state Early Learning Guidelines (ELGs) and statewide school readiness assessments administered in kindergarten, and an outline of key considerations for thinking about readiness at the state level.
This article was very informative about the status of early childhood assessment at the state level, with a focus on the use of Early Learning Guidelines. It makes a clear case for the importance of focusing on early childhood education for life long success of young children. It also discusses states’ challenges when it comes to early childhood assessment and the critical need to assess children appropriately during these early years.
