Home Language for Success in School and Life
The Office of Head Start has authored a list of guiding principles for the education of dual language learners, and this presentation illustrates Multicultural Principle 6 which states: Effective programs for children who speak languages other than English require development of the first language while the acquisition of English is facilitated. This resource is a presentation which provides a brief description of the dual language learner population, the knowledge and skills they bring, and the challenges they face when acquiring English. The presentation provides evidence to challenge a common myth regarding home language use getting in the way of learning English, and encourages viewers to consider home language skills along with family and cultural identity as a strength.
