Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards
This resource is based on the vision and principles of the Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas, addressing NGSS-based assessment development practices. The three-dimensional science design and vision in the NGSS require new approaches for science assessment, posing challenges and opportunities for assessment development. To address this need, the Committee on Developing Assessments of Science Proficiency in K-12 offers in this book a multifaceted approach to assessment design based on cognitive research and theory and measurement science.
The authors offer strategic assessment development recommendations to state and national policy makers, research organizations, assessment developers and educators. This resource is freely downloadable from the National Academies Press, with an e-mail registration and a statement of purpose for use of the resource. The book addresses a set of criteria to inform stakeholders and interested audiences about developing science assessments. Each chapter emphasizes design, validity, utility, equity, development practices, monitoring and assessment system design and implementation.
