In this article, curriculum design experts and educators Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins present five big ideas about the Common Core State Standards and their translation into a curriculum. The authors highlight potential misconceptions in working with the Standards and offer recommendations for designing a coherent curriculum and assessment system for the Standards.
This blog post provides a nice overview of the main qualities of the CCSS for educators at various levels (e.g, the CCSS focuses on the integration of content and practice and the need to keep the skill of transfer in mind as an ultimate goal). It also lays out a plan for using the Standards as a road map for curriculum development. While not everyone will agree with the method that the authors’ have outlined, it can serve as an important starting point for discussion around Standards’ implementation through curriculum development.
