Internet Inquiry: Fundamental Competencies for Online Comprehension
“Internet Inquiry: Fundamental Competencies for Online Comprehension” by Drs. Tara Kingsley and Susan Tancock is an article in The Reading Teacher. The authors present four competencies for conducting research online: generating a question to guide inquiry, searching for information online, evaluating websites, and synthesizing information across sources.
In this article, the authors present four competencies that are essential for students to be able to successfully conduct research online. The authors also provide examples of how teachers might teach each of these competencies. Related to generating questions, for example, they share how teachers might model the question generation process and help students to develop “researchable” questions. These and other examples are clear and could easily be incorporated as part of classroom instruction.
