Introductory Overview of C3 for Educators
The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) created this 45-minute webinar as an introduction to the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards. The NCSS President, Dr. Michelle Herczog, narrates the webinar, which also includes video clips of different researchers who were involved in creating the C3 Framework. The resource provides background information about the development and structure of the C3 Framework, as well as the many experts and organizations who contributed to its creation. A major focus of the webinar is to explain the four dimensions that discipline the C3 Framework inquiry arc:
developing questions and planning inquiries;
applying disciplinary tools and concepts;
evaluating sources and using evidence; and
communicating conclusions and taking informed action.
A secondary focus of the webinar is to explain the intentional connections between the C3 Framework and the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. The webinar also includes a five-minute video of what it might look like to enact the C3 Framework in a fifth-grade classroom. At the conclusion, there is a list of all webinars that are available from the National Council for the Social Studies.
The NCSS webinar provides a helpful overview of the development, structure, and purpose of the C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards. This webinar would be especially helpful for state, district, and school leaders who have responsibilities for linking their local social studies standards with the C3 Framework. For example, the narrator explains how states would link their content standards with the content concepts and ideas in dimension two of the inquiry arc in the Framework. These same stakeholders would also find it helpful to hear the description of how the C3 Framework incorporates the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy (e.g., incorporates anchor standards in Framework, uses shared language).
