BEAL workshops are now available as an online course, available for ELA and mathematics content areas. Four interactive modules take educators from understanding types and purposes of assessment to a focus on the instructional significance of Smarter Balanced performance tasks.
In this convenient and affordable course, designed for teachers and those who support them, participants have the opportunity to:
- Understand scoring materials and the design of Smarter Balanced performance tasks.
- Apply evidence-based scoring strategies to score authentic student work samples.
- Identify meaningful teaching and learning experiences as learning is applied to classroom practice.
- Make sense of learning and collaborate with peers in synchronous community of practice meetings.
BEAL workshops also provide opportunities for educators to develop a shared understanding of the different types of assessment in a comprehensive assessment system and their purposes. Participants will explore a variety of aligned Smarter Balanced tools and resources that support local assessment practice and classroom instruction, while fostering accessibility and equity for all students.
The course promotes sustainability of assessment practices across a school or district for educators who have familiarity with the Smarter Balanced system and the integration of performance tasks into the classroom, while also providing a solid foundation for educators who are being introduced this content.

“This course provided me with a greater view of how the standards in ELA are developed and assessed from the primary grades to the upper grades.”
“I found this course was very valuable. It really painted a clear picture of what is expected, what we should be working on with our students to prepare them, and it provides good examples and resources for teachers to implement in their classrooms.”
