Artful Connections with Math
Lesson plans and training videos for 2nd and 3rd grade teachers are provided by the Armory Center for the Arts. The purpose of the lesson plans is to to advance learning and achievement in math among struggling student populations. The lessons are hands-on to engage and motivate all styles of learners, particularly visual and kinesthetic. The lesson plans and training videos were developed as a collaboration between the Armory and the Pasadena Unified School District.
Although these lesson plans integrate California math and arts standards for grades 2-3, they are broadly applicable and adaptable for any classroom in states other than California based on math topics covered. For example, there are lessons on regrouping, fractions, place value, area perimeter, and multiplication arrays, to name a few. There are 13 free, downloadable lesson plans in all. Each lesson’s goals are clearly stated, and the lessons are manageable (1-2 day lessons). The accompanying videos are highly useful for orienting teachers on implementing the lesson plans.
