Burro’s Tortillas: Using “Realia” to Build Background Knowledge

In this video, the teacher describes the “realia” activity she used to introduce Burro’s Tortillas and some of the items she brought into the classroom for the lesson. To build and connect to background knowledge, the teacher uses culturally relevant artifacts and activities and student’s native language to draw upon students’ existing knowledge.
