Illustrative Mathematics Task Review Criteria
This tool can be used to design lessons and tasks and to evaluate the alignment of existing ones. It was developed for use in vetting resources to be included in the Illustrative Mathematics task bank. Teachers, instructional coaches, and other educators will find it useful for classroom-level use as well. It provides an eight-point system for evaluating a mathematical task in order to determine whether it supports the depth of learning called for in college and career readiness standards.
This tool was designed to evaluate existing lessons and tasks, but it could also be used in instructional planning to help teachers develop new lessons and tasks. What makes this resource so useful is that it is short, well organized, and includes explanations and examples. In under two pages, eight aspects of a mathematical tasks, such as purpose, context, and language, are spelled out.
