Support Protecting Native Culture during the Implementation of Common Core State Standards
In this resolution, the National Congress of American Indians calls upon states who have adopted the Common Core State Standards to evaluate AI student needs, and then to consult, collaborate, and develop tribal-state partnerships that specify additional standards ensuring Native histories, cultures, languages, tribal sovereignty, and government structures. It also calls on states to ensure that curriculum, professional development, and assessments are culturally relevant and to provide the resources necessary to help AI students meet the standards.
The purposes of this resolution are clearly stated in the resolution itself. The document promotes the value and importance of including American Indian culture and needs when developing and assessing academic standards. Communications quality is excellent. The resolution could have a valuable impact on both the Common Core and other state standards, as well as on the assessments aligned to them.
