What do I need to know about the Common Core? Top 8 Questions Parents Ask Teachers
The top eight questions about the Common Core that parents ask teachers are answered in this resource. Written by a group of teachers for parents, this resource provides answers to questions regarding where the Common Core came from, who wrote the standards, and how the Common Core differs from previous standards.
The purposes of this publication are illustrated directly in the title and subtitle rather than in an introduction. These purposes are generally met. However, the publication is largely written in a promotional style; that is, it promotes the Common Core State Standards without describing issues that have caused a number of states to either not participate in the CCSS or to withdraw their support. Comprehensibility is enhanced through easily understood language, quality design, and brevity. The resource is reasonably useful, although it could have been enhanced with additional details, such as: how the new assessments will differ from more traditional assessments; and the potential for additional costs or increased needs for professional development. The quality of the resource is hindered by its lack of specific evidence in other parts of the publication.
