NGSS Evidence Statements for Middle School
The NGSS evidence statements for middle school (grades 6-8) provide additional details about what students should know and be able to do at the end of instruction to demonstrate proficiency for each middle school performance expectation in the NGSS. Further, the evidence statements describe how students can use the practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas (three dimensions) to demonstrate proficiency for the performance expectations. They are intended to identify clear, measurable components that can be used when designing assessments for the NGSS. The evidence statements were developed by many of the members of the NGSS writing team.
Developed to offer additional clarity to the NGSS performance expectations, the evidence statements provide important details to aid educators, assessment developers, and policymakers in determining forms of measurable evidence of proficiency for the NGSS. Evidence statements provide more detail for each of the three dimensions, describing how students can demonstrate three-dimensional learning with respect to the performance expectations, while also remaining context agnostic. The evidence statements should prove useful in the design of NGSS assessments for both formative and summative purposes.
