Planned Language Approach (PLA) for Early Childhood Programs
The Planned Language Approach (PLA) is a research-based system of services within an early childhood program designed to ensure high-quality, effective language and literacy instruction for dual language learners (DLLs) and children who speak only English. This website provides guides, organizational tools, and videos that can be used to develop programs, promote professional development, and support family and community engagement. The key components of the PLA are as follows: Research Base; Home Language Support; Strategies that Support DLLs; Policies, Practices & Systems; and the Big 5 for All.
There are numerous resources on this website for program administrators, teachers, and families. The terminology is well-defined, and the documents are supported with visuals, reproducible graphic organizers, and other tools. Many documents are available in Spanish.
